Draft history:
2006 AFL Rookie Draft 3rd round selection (Collingwood) No. 40 overall; 2007 rookie elevation (Collingwood) 2008 season
An impressive season for Clarke who bounced back from a form and side drop (played in the VFL in round two) in the beginning of the year to improve and play 22 senior games. His speed to contests made him a solid contributor in the backline and averaged 14 disposals for the season. Against the minor premiers Geelong, Clarke was simply outstanding racking up a career-high 28 disposals, seven marks and kicked one goal. He played on some of the biggest names over the course of the season including Adam Goodes and Brad Sewell. At times he was thrown into the midfield and could see some time there in 2009. Career The young Irishman from County Down was one of the stories of 2007 for not only Collingwood, but indeed the AFL. Having first touched an AFL football towards the end of 2006, the strong-bodied midfielder who had previously starred playing Gaelic football, was offered a two-year international rookie contract by the Magpies for the 2007 and 2008 seasons, but by the middle of 2007 he had already impressed and he was elevated to the senior list due to the long-term injury to John Anthony. A gifted endurance athlete who can also accelerate with purpose, Clarke was rewarded for his phenomenal debut season with a permanent place on the Collingwood senior list in 2008.
